The home projection system is topical right now, as Cinemas struggle to cope with the pandemic. So, read here to find the answer to your questions about 5000-lumen projectors. Projector output is measured in Lumens, and getting a bright enough projector for your needs makes a big difference to your viewing enjoyment. The longer the distance between your projector and your screen, the lower the subjective brightness and the more ambient light there is in a room (or outdoors), the more possibility there is of the projected image being swamped. There can be a noticeable difference when comparing 3000 to 5000-lumen projectors and even 4000 to 5000-lumen projectors. So, what is the best 5,000-lumen projector?

Top 3 models of 5,000-lumen projector
- Best for Flexible Setup Functions: BenQ MH760
This is a great 5000 lumens projector, with an impressive level of picture quality. It is full 1920x1080p HD and has a 10,000:1 contrast ratio – which makes it subjectively as sharp at normal viewing distances as some far more costly 4K projectors. What we like though about the MH760 are the many adjustment tools, network interfaces, and set up functions, plus the horizontal and vertical keystone adjusters (some projectors only get vertical or horizontal). - Best for 1.6x Zoom Function: Optoma EH512
Not all projectors have zoom functions, which is a pity as they can be convenient getting just precisely the right projected image. The Optoma EH512 has a very commendable 1.6x zoom, coupled with a +16° vertical lens shift, and also vertical keystone correction. Add all those together, and you get great versatility when setting the projector up. That’s why, as well as being a popular model for indoor home use, you also see the EH512 in outdoor home use and even out on the road, being used for sales and marketing business presentations. They also crop up in churches, nightclubs, and public venues. It’s a well thought out design. - Best for Affordability: YABER Y60
You don’t need always to pay top dollars for a 5,000-lumen projector – you just need to pay enough. That seems to be the philosophy behind the Yaber Y60. You get a decent projector at a reasonable price. Treat yourself without breaking the bank.
What to look for in a 5,000-lumen projector
As you would expect, there are many suitable projectors out there, and it all depends on use cases. Are you showing movies or showing a PowerPoint? Will it be one or two people watching or a small group?
We looked at five great models, including long throw and short throw 5000-lumen projectors. We explored the topical new wireless capabilities that are appearing, which removes the need for messy cabling.
The big brand names in home projection include Sony, NEC, Panasonic, Epson, BenQ, and Viewsonic. All of them make good models but are not necessarily targeted at the same uses cases. There are good alternatives. It’s meaningless to pick a ‘best’ without being specific about the use cases, buying criteria or technology you are after. An LED projector is a different proposition to a laser. A near commercial-grade 4k projector is a different proposition to a low cost (under $1,000) or budget (under $500) portable or sub-1080p HD projector.
Generally, if you are looking for a 5,000-lumen projector, you get what you pay for. Very cheap 5000-lumen projectors are rare. The low-cost models we would not have recommended on our list have outputs of 3,000 lumens or less. Our list is not just about popular or low-price models. Affordable is good, cheap and nasty is not. Nor do we care much how a projector is rated by other sites or any ‘top reviews’. It is all about finding the right product for you.
Best 5000 Lumen Projectors in 2022
So, now let’s review in-depth our five recommended 5,000 lumens or more projectors.
1. BenQ MH760 1080P Business Projector 5000 Lumens
If you need to move the projector around, you need a quite different kind of projector compared to something that is fixed. There are many reasons why you might need to run a projector around. We won’t bother wi going into all of them, but (for example) a ceiling-mounted permanently fixed projector doesn’t necessarily need the same level of adjustments as a projector that’s heading out to halls, meeting rooms, customer sites etc. and which might be used on a desktop or a stand.
This is in any use case a great 5000 lumens projector and the picture quality all there. Now some may say ‘well we need a 4K projector because it has more pixels’. That’s a bit misleading. More pixels are indeed better on paper and in theory. The problem is we humans aren’t especially good at resolving fine detail unless we are pretty close to it. In a nutshell, 4K is usually not worth it. We had known this since 2012 when the undeniable fact that was adding detail that is too small to see is pointless.
This chart shows that unless you have a giant screen and are sitting very close then 4K gives little or no benefit over Full HD.
So, don’t worry about this 1080p projector not being good enough. It is god, whole, no-cheating full 1920x1080p HD and more to the point has a 10,000:1 contrast ratio – which we also know from research makes it subjectively as just as sharp at normal viewing distances and screen sizes as some far more costly true 4K projectors.
OK, that’s the science over. What we want to say really like about this MH760 are the many ‘moving the projector around’ adjustment tools, network interfaces and setup gizmos, and the horizontal and vertical keystone adjusters, that make this a breeze as a mobile proposition.
- BenQ has nailed portability
- The picture quality is as good as – if not better than some 4K projectors costing twice as much
- A minor niggle is you have to buy an HDCP adapter if you want to play iTunes
Final words: This is a versatile ‘go-anywhere’ projector that many, or maybe most people will find fits their needs.
2. Optoma EH512 1080P / WUXGA Support Business Projector with High Brightness 5,000 Lumens
Back to the perils of setup. Zoom functions can be convenient for the right projected image. Not all projectors have them. The Optoma EH512 does. It has up to 1.6x zoom, paired with a +16° vertical lens shifter, and vertical keystone correction. Full ‘x and y’ parallelogram keystone control would have been nice, but we are not complaining.
All this is great when setting the projector up for indoor or garden home use. You also ‘road warrior’ Salesfolks choosing the EH512 for sales and marketing business presentations. Much like the BenQ, the Optoma, in our opinion, will please many users.
- WUXGA gives resolution above 1080p, which can be useful with PowerPoint in the right viewing conditions
- We love the zoom function
- Great looking pictures
- OK, we admit it – we’d have preferred full keystone functions
Final words: It’s a very close run thing between the BenQ and the Optoma for the top slot – in the portability stakes.
3. YABER Y60 Portable Projector with 5500 Lumen Upgrade Full HD 1080P
Now then. We haven’t discussed money yet.
Here’s a secret. You don’t need – if you have the right information – to pay that much for a 5,000-lumen projector. Please don’t buy something cheap and poorly made but equally, you can get a good enough product if you spend enough. The Yaber Y60 does not have all the toolsets of the BenQ and Optoma. Fair enough. But it is no slouch either.
It’s about 10% brighter than our top two models for starters. That 5,500 lumens are that much more. Just like in Spinal Tap, the Yaber does go up to 11. It has a slightly odd stated resolution of 1080x720Pbut in practice you’d be hard put to see the difference compared to 1920×1080.
You also get a basic zoom function (we like that as you already know) and a reasonable contrast ratio of 5,000: 1.
What we are saying is – for the money – this is a good projector.
- Very reasonable picture quality at the price point
- We like the zoom function – one of our favourite features on any model
- 5,500 lumens is excellent for the money
- Don’t expect everything you would get from a high-spec and high-cost projector
Final words: An honest, no-nonsense 5,000 lumens plus projector that makes sense if you want something affordable.
4. DR. J AK-30 Professional 6800 Lumens LCD Projector Full HD Projector
Specmanship can be an issue in consumer electronics. Marketing departments can and do sometimes use weasel words. So, if you mean ‘I want a bright projector’ rather than ‘I want precisely 5,000 lumens’ then we would like to present DR.J to you. This is a projector we already know and like, and this specific model hits 6,800 lumens, delivers full HD and has an 8,000:1 contrast ratio.
So, if our first three offerings don’t quite hit the spot, try going down to the doctors for an AK-30.
- Very high output for this price range
- Genuine 1080p resolution
- Good contrast ratio
- Up to 30 feet throw
- A bit more in the wireless department could have been nice
Final words: More is indeed sometimes better – ask the Doctor.
5. QKK Mini Projector 4500 Lumens Portable LCD Projector with 100″ Projector Screen
If more is sometimes better, then sometimes less is more too. We haven’t talked much about screens. Put simply the better the screen, the better your projector will look. So, a good 5,000 lumens projector on a lousy screen (or worse still a wall or white sheet) will look worse than an excellent 4,000-lumen projector on a good screen. So, guess what, this QKK QK02 is a 4,500 lumen LCD/LED projector that comes with a high screen thrown in for ‘free’. That can make a lot of sense. First, you have a screen (obviously) and aren’t trying to find white paint good enough for a wall or use an old bedsheet. Secondly, the QKK projector and screen are, in fact, a closed-loop calibrated system that you know the vendor has chosen to give you an uncomplicated experience.
So, how does that grab you?
- A decent projector with a decent screen
- Hassle-free setup
- Great as a ‘one-stop-shop’ starter kit
- Great if you are out on the road
- QKK’s English is a bit dense – you might find the instructions a bit impenetrable
Final words: Our final choice is something a bit left-field, but the QKK QK02 is a different kind of proposition that can make perfect sense.
Conclusion
There are plenty of suitable projectors out there, but only you know which one is right for you. So, we hope we have given you some models that might well tick the right boxes.

What kinds of screens are there?
Hey Pitty. There are many types on the market. You can get screens that fit flush to the wall, portable screens that come with a stand and manual pull-down or pull-up electric-powered screens, that can be put away when not in use. Then there are rear projection screens and paint-on screens. There might just be a new article in all of that, thanks for suggesting it.
